      <image:title>About Pianzhuan</image:title>
      <image:caption>I’m a lifelong martial artist. I’ve, been to different schools and studied different styles. Where do they differ? What do they share? What did I find important? How often and for how long should I practice? What, am I actually practicing? Why am I doing this? One day an artist said to me, “So what is it that you do?” I said, “Martial Arts”. He laughed and said to me after observation, “No. What is the name of your style”? It didn’t have a name. You see, over years, I took components of different arts and put them together as they suited or fit me. I saw purpose in much. I had ability too. In some areas, well, I couldn’t preform techniques well or sometimes perform them at all. It wasn’t for lack of effort, and it wasn’t for lack of understanding. Let me explain. I know HOW to slam dunk a basketball. I’m also 5’5”. I’ve tried my whole life to dunk a ball, but I just don’t think it’s written in the stars for me, especially at the young age of 50. So instead of flapping my arms harder and faster in the hopes that I will take air like a bird in flight, I decided work on on skills that I can perform and skills that I can improve. But even more then execution, application, forms and katas, what do the arts mean to me. They mean something different to each of us, but to quote a teacher of mine “where within is the life lesson?” I choose not to define what martial arts is. But I am a martial being…and then some. WHY NOW? Rolling back to about 2016, a teacher of mine suggested that I put a name to the art and write a book. About a year later I found a suitable name, ”Pianzhuan” which means deflection. And today, while recovering from open-heart surgery I’ve decided to use my recovery time to compose this book. Mind Body Spirit Martial life is more than just breaking boards. (Continued in blog). Pianzhuan means deflection. To deflect, change or absorb and redirect energy is the art of Pianzhuan. Pianzhuan is a combination of styles and a philosophy.</image:caption>

Eyes, throat, sternum, elbows, groin and knees are the areas one attacks in this particular style. It was a system developed to combat two styles: crane and snake. Wing Chun is a soft circular style where the artist generates explosive energy from within a small space. It is a southern Chinese made famous by Ip Man. This is Bil Sau. I think of this as fingers seeking the eyes to poke or flick or can be aimed towards the throat. Fut Sau - reach your hand down 45 degrees and pronate your hand so your thumb is down and pinky is up. Bong Sau - similar to a high block or a rising block with hand open, fingers together, seeking center, thumb down. Lan Sau - I think about trapping and the opponent’s arm. As if my elbow is on top of their elbow joint trapping their arm against their body. My arm is horizontal at a 90-degree angle and if my arm is long enough, my hand can seek and trap their other elbow joint giving me a double trap. Gum Sau - like a low bong sau. Triangle Theory - Draw an imaginary triangle starting from your shoulders. Extend your arms and put your hands together in the center. Your opponent has the same triangle.       <image:caption>Anthony was born in 1971 and is the father of 4 children. He is an artist and a martial artist, a graduate of the Restaurant School at Walnut Hill and attended both Penn State University and College of DuPage. He and his family live on the countryside of Pennsylvania. Anthony is 50 years old and “I have been studying various arts for a long time but not long enough”. He has a mastery in self-defense and black belt in Tang Soo Do. In his mid 40’s he competed in 2 full contact Muay Thai matches and won both by TKO in the second round. Age restrictions in the sport eliminated his chance of excelling beyond amateur ranking. He has a love for learning and teaching and participated in 6 different arts ranging from soft to hard forms, stick, knife and open hand systems. In bodybuilding he competed in the National Physique Committee. He won Mr. Keystone Middle Weight Division and was light heavy weight and overall champion in the 2005 Mr. Pennsylvania competition. This book is a compilation, a piece of his martial experience and education. We hope you share with others what his many teachers have taught and shared with me.</image:caption>
